From the care corner

Nurse Michelle is primarily concerned with the post-surgical care of patients at Somerset Surgery. She shares tips on post-operative care following breast surgery.

TAPING

Following surgery, you should tape your incision/s for at least 3 months. Change the Micropore every 7 to 10 days – not every day, as this will irritate the surrounding skin and cause a secondary problem. The tape supports your incisions and helps to prevent the widening of scars.

SCAR SCIENCE

Apply Scar Science to your incisions for 6 weeks post-operatively. For the first 3 weeks you must apply it over the Micropore and for the following 3 weeks directly on the scar.

POST-OPERATIVE GARMENTS

You should wear your post-operative bra day and night for 6 weeks following surgery. Then for 6 weeks only during the day. The bra ensures proper positioning of your implants and prevents drooping and malalignment.

RESUMING ACTIVITY

The rule of thumb is: listen to your body. If it hurts, don’t do it! Your body will tell you what it can handle and what it can’t. Avoid any jarring activities, such as running, push ups and rowing.

BIO OIL/TISSUE OIL

Do not apply these products to your scars as they will cause elasticity in the skin and widening of the scars. Think about it this way: what does a pregnant woman apply to her skin to make it more supple and prevent stretch marks? Bio Oil or tissue oil, which causes the skin to stretch. Therefore these products would cause a scar to stretch and widen.
